Turkey In A Bag is a way to cook a turkey where it is juicy. I cook my turkey this way because you don’t have to baste it while it is cooking. For a couple of years now I have not used this method because I could not find the brown paper bag that you use. When you cook the turkey in a brown paper bag, you will love the way it cooks a turkey.
At our Wednesday Night Wine and Dine, one of our members introduced this method again. I have learned where to find brown paper bags. Now I will use this method again. This event was paired with a Savion Blanc wine from Wine Ambassador, the home of our Wine of the Month Club, and it was superb. Try It!
Ingredients to use
- 1 turkey (10 to 20 lbs)
- celery stick, chopped (1)
- 1 carrot, chopped
- 1 onion, peeled and cut into large pieces
- Salt and pepper
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1 lemon, quartered
- 6 tbsp butter, softened
- Brown paper shopping bag (you might need 2 bags)
Now you start to get ready to cook this turkey in a bag by making sure the bag is large enough for the turkey. Do this before you unwrap the turkey, so you don’t have to handle a raw turkey, taking him in and out of the bag. The turkey needs to be put in the bag and it needs room for you to close the bag and staple it ao it stays closed. If the bag is not long enough this is where you use two paper bags. Attach the 2nd bag to the second bag.
If you need to use a second bag, first, if it has handles cut them off. Take the second bag, ut part off, about half of the bag. Then you attach the part that is not the bottom to the first bag, staple it to the first bag. Now sew it with a needle and thread. Make sure you can close and staple the bag.
For your turkey, you should buy one that is fresh, not frozen. But, if you have a frozen make sure it is thawed. You will pay more for a fresh turkey than a frozen turkey, but you will not have to worry about defrosting it.
Take the turkey out of the refrigerator 2 hours before you cook it. Make sure it is at room temperature so the cooking time won’t be affected.
Preheat your oven to 375.
Sprinkle the turkey all over with salt and pepper, even the insides. Then rub it in Remember to take out the giblets, usually, they are packed inside the turkey in a plastic bag The onion, celery, carrots, and lemon inside the turkey and you can put the giblets inside with these ingredients. Rub 4 tbsp of butter all over the turkey.
Rub the rest of the butter that left (2 tbsp) inside the paper bag. Place the turkey in the brown paper bag. Place the bag in a roasting pan. Pour the chicken broth inside the turkey. Fold the bag closed and staple it so it stays closed.
Now it’s time to put the turkey in the oven. It will take approximately 2.5 hours for the first 10 lbs. Set the timer and forget about the turkey until the timer goes off.
Put the turkey in the oven. Estimate the cooking time – it’s 2.5 hours for the first 10 lbs, plus 12 minutes for each additional pound (for example, the cooking time for 12 lb turkey is 2.5 hours + 12 minutes + 12 minutes = 2 hours 54 minutes). Set the timer for the cooking time and forget about the turkey until the timer beeps!
When the timer goes off, your turkey should be ready . Leave it in the bag for 15 minutes before opening the bag. Then cut the bag open and enjoy your deliciously brown turkey that so moist! Enjoy A great dinner!!
This will be the greatest turkey dinner you will eat. You will remember this meal and never cook your turkey any other way. Don’t forget to check out our Fine Wine section here.
These are the type of sharings we do on our Wednesday Nights Wine and Dine Show. Everyone is invited to attend and be part of us sharing and cooking a meal as we show you what wine pairs well with the meal. Be there!!
