Retirement From The Job—Not from Life

Retirement From The Job—Not from Life. That is what I wanted when I began thinking about getting out of the 9-to-5 world of working. It took me about 3 years to make up my mind to really leave my job. I was a school district employee and had been working there since I was 19 years old. When I started with this idea, I was only 50 years old. My husband was long since deceased, and my two daughters were grown. I was basically living alone. Not to count the times when they would move back in temporarily.

I was not financially prepared for retirement. All I knew was that it was time for me to leave. For 38 years, I had worked at this job. It was not going to make me rich. Where to start, I did not know. I knew I had to be able to pay my bills, the ones that come around every month. The school district had a good retirement plan, so I would be able to live. What about the things I liked to do that had nothing to do with finances? Would I still be able to take my vacation every year? My hobby was bowling. I bowled with a league weekly. I loved to travel; could I keep it up? These are things I did not know before retiring. Let’s go through them.

Getting Started with a Plan For Retirement

retirement

Start with the plan and write it down. What do you want to do when you retire? Make a list of the most important things first. If you own a home and still paying on it, your payment, Your car, household bills, taxes, and insurance. These are things you must have to keep afloat. Then list the items that are in your view that you want to do. If you are still a little unsure about some of this, it’s alright to just start with things you want to do while being retired.

List Your Assets

Make a list of the assets that you have acquired or saved up while you are working. Preparing for retirement should begin when you first start working at your job. Most companies have plans. Saving a little at a time and not touching it for years builds up. Your traditional assets, such as savings, IRAs, stocks, and bonds, come from your banks and other sources.

Your Health

If you want to enjoy your retirement without a hitch, start by taking care of your health. You want to be as fit as possible so that it does not hinder you from doing the things you planned when you made your list. Make regular doctor appointments and dental appointments, and work with your doctor on things such as prevention and your dentist on teeth cleanings and other areas of care.

When To Apply for Social Security

retirement

I retired when I was only 53 years of age. So, applying for social security was out for the moment. I had my retirement from working, so this is what I started with. It had been hard to save money as an only parent. So my savings were very small. I could not apply for social security until I was 62. My job, which was in the Independent School District, had its own retirement plan, and when I started to work for them, they did not take out social security. So there were no social security payments.

I was told by Social Security that I could get a check from them because of my husband, but I would have to give up the retirement from my job. I thanked them and told them if they paid me what the school district paid me, I would take it. They said it would be nowhere near what I was already getting. All I could get because of my husband’s passing was Medicare, and I would have to pay for that.

It is best to wait to claim social security if you can because the longer you wait, the more you build up delayed retirement credits, which can cause you to get higher social security payments with increases each year until age 70. Most of us do not care to wait; we want our social security payments to start when we are eligible.

Building A Network Through Social Media and Other Avenues

We need to build a network through social media and other avenues. Just because we retired from work does not mean we retired from life. Spend about an hour every day on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or other social media platforms to build relationships with others who have retired or are about to retire. You don’t know what type of opportunity will come through that can be of benefit to you.

Make a Decision: Do I Want (or Need) to Work?

After I put in my papers to retire, I said immediately that I was not going to work for anybody else. I told everyone—family and friends—not to call me before 9:00 A.M. I would be sleeping late. They could call after nine. I enjoyed getting up at nine a.m. and not having to leave home to work. But the fact that my need for something to do was still there.

I was a part-time insurance agent, so I began getting up and going to the insurance office around 12:00 noon. Then I decided to go back to work, not to my old job, to try something new. I worked on another job for about three months. What I found out was that I did not want to work for anybody else and that it was time to find something I could do working from home. I wanted to be my own “boss.”.

Choosing A Work-at-Home Position

Working on the computer had become extremely attractive to me, so I found many people online who said they were earning an income online.

This had to be my answer to working from home. I started searching for programs. I found some that cost you money to join. Before I wasted some money, I looked for one that did not cost you anything to start. I found one and worked with it for a while, but it yielded no money, so I left it. I found another and started working on it.

It yielded a little, so I worked with it for almost 2 years and was still working with it when one night I said this was not earning me the kind of money I wanted, so I started looking for another.

I was going through my email one night and up popped this one that said “guaranteed to work.” It was Rory Ricord. I started to investigate it and decided I would try it. It was Blogging for Cash with Rory. I had never done any blogging, but I said I would try. I did enroll to start the program. That’s where I am now. This program proved to be just what I was looking for. So working from home is what I am doing now. Great program, just right for a retiree and anybody else who is looking for a work-from-home position. Join the program here.
